#1 ISSUE: MEETING PEOPLES NEEDS In 1990 I ran for Monterey City Council on the exact same platform. See if you agree with me on these issues which I defined during that campaign. 1. Streamline Planning Department Proceedures. Offer Constructive Ideas- Not Restrictions. Listen to People. 2. Deal with Problems - Stop over-reacting to symptoms. 3. Focus: Education, housing, Jobs, Youth, Elderly, Water. 4. Selective Growth: 5. Jobs / Water: Build New Water Reclamation Projects; Desalination Plant, Dredge Dams, Add Reservoirs, Build New Dam. Use Local Labor. Instill "Lifes" Values. 6. Create Awareness and Responsibility. Stop Penalizing. 7. $1,000,000 Fund: Special Funding for Volunteerism. Help when it is needed. Sports / Day Care / Instruction, Etc. 8. Business Needs: Honor reasonable requests of business. Don't drag them through the bureaucratic quagmire. Lessen Parking Variance Fees. Remove Downtown Metered Parking. Re-evaluate Parking Programs. 9. Honest Government - Encourage Public Involvement. 10. Fort Ord: Create a "Format" for "Cooperation" between local governing bodies. Seek public input. Make decisions after looking at the facts. 11. This is a new age. Our thinking must change. We need leadership with the courage to "rework" the system and "shift" it back into gear. MEET PEOPLE'S NEEDS NOW! 12. Become Co-Partners with Educational and Youth Resources: Finance, Teach, Educate, Build Self Worth. Make Resources Available Now. FIX THE SYSTEM. 13. Police Department: Needs better direction from the City Council. 14. Taxation With Representation - You Bet! Too Many Fees, Penalties, Parking, Franchise Taxes. Whereas it is a revenue source for the city, it is a major disservice to the public. 15. Open Honest Government - Eliminate Hidden Agendas. 16. Del Monte Ave: A hostage Scenario. Re-Evaluate. 17. Facilities Exist: Open School Gymnasiums, Playgrounds and School Rooms with city financial aid and volunteerism. People Helping People, Now! 18. Hand walk people through the system. Our lives are too short and too valuable. 19. JUDGE BY MERIT - STOP OVER-REGULATION.
Fifteen years later these issues are acute
1. Schools, children, gangs, inability to parent.
SOLUTIONSMPUSD: The district is operating in a bankrupt statis. It does not have enough money to keep its schools open. As a result of recent school closures, classroom size "often" exceeds forty when 28 use to be considered over-crowding. State Audit the district. City Educate the public. Support a tax measure. AUDIT - EDUCATE - FUND . POLICE DEPARTMENT: Problems within the police department indicate a need for outside CITIZEN REVIEW. The current computer which was purchased several years ago has not performed correctly. Good police officers have been forced to leave. To many investigations are not being handled ethically. We need to find out what is wrong. WATER: The current Monterey City Council has endorsed water credits for the privledged and want to CONTROL WATER. Their advisory vote to disband the water district cost you the tax payer about fourteen thousand dollars. TAKE POLITICS OUT OF WATER, AND WHAT DO YOU HAVE? "WATER"! (AND JOBS) JOBS: The City must encourage and help business meet its needs. We can create new jobs within water developement projects. HOUSING: Any suggestions? Fort Ord. SPECIAL FUND: Money available on a need basis.
