Moss Landing Harbor District Candidate StatementBy Russ JeffriesCandidate for Board Member; Moss Landing Harbor District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Moss Landing Harbor is the gateway to the Monterey Bay. It must be managed efficiently to meet the needs of the public, our fishing industry, pleasure boaters and scientific community. Comprehensive dredging and dock replacement plans that are environmentally protective yet economically responsible must be implemented to protect these interests. Our Harbor District must prevent waste and pollution in the Elkhorn Slough generated by private, for-profit companies. It must guarantee sound budgeting practices to protect taxpayers and to insure the effective operation of the Harbor through diversification. Finally, it must serve all boaters, fishermen, marine researchers, and the public in a direct, efficient, honest and financially responsible manner. I bring experience to the commission. I am the vice-chairperson of the California Regional Water Quality Control Board, which assures the water quality of our streams and rivers, Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. I am a business owner, a Monterey County native, and a former Mayor of Salinas. Previously, I served on the Monterey County Water Resources Agency and fought to protect our coastal resources from pollution, damage from erosion and over-development. With your vote, please help me to serve you as your Moss Landing Harbor District Commissioner. |
