The First District needs a Supervisor who will open up County government to greater public involvement. The public has a difficult time simply following the actions of County government, let alone influencing them. And the First District has endured vacancies on key boards and commissions for months and years.
Public participation is discouraged by current Board of Supervisors practices. Meetings are held during most peoples' working hours, so people have to take time off work to observe or participate. And because many agenda items are not timed, citizens must set aside a whole day to be sure they will be present for one half-hour item. Also, meetings are not available on cable TV or on the internet. I will work to change these practices so that citizens can more easily get involved. In addition, I will hold both informal meetings and, when appropriate, formal hearings in the District during evenings and weekends to get broad input on items of community concern.
