Getting direction and information from the population, not just from the consultants/experts.Each time I have been involved in a movement, it seems that consultants generally come up with solutions that are in conflict with the local, majority opinions. I have repeatedly been to neighborhood meetings that are conducted in such a way that only at the end of the meeting or after much probing by the attendees, is the no project or different project option offered. It seems that the plan is already thought out before public input is sought, and that the expert's bias toward the direction of those hiring them is always the top idea presented/discussed. For example: During the public meetings on the Little Lake Industry Site, located between H and I Streets South of Samoa, the option of the site being simply an extension of the Marsh Wildlife Area was not offered, and to us attendees not really an option. Many of us felt, the extension was a clear choice that would make it a Gateway enhancement of the Marsh and surrounding area. Once realized as an option, at the second meeting people were more forthcoming with their support for the Marsh extension idea with little, or no developement. The question is: why wasn't this offered initially as a viable option, instead of just what type of developement should be done. |
