This information is provided by the candidate |
Protecting our Paradise, A Working Woman for Solid Infrastructure,, Environmental Protection, and Social JusticeDedicated to Protecting Open Space As an environmentalist, Harmony Groves enjoys working to keep Arcata beautiful and accessible for citizens to enjoy. Infill is a key factor in protecting Arcata's open spaces. Groves supports inclusion of residential uses in commercial zones. While some have advocated annexing new lands to our city, Harmony Groves knows that annexation is not yet necessary. She supports infill as a measure to develop Arcata slowly and protect open space. Harmony Groves will support the protection of our creeks and wetlands in Arcata. Priority of Less Waste Groves recently worked to save Humboldt State University's Campus Recycling Program. Harmony Groves is dedicated to finding more ways to reduce our footprint on the Earth by reusing and recycling resources. She is an advocate for alternative energy and will work to push for programs that will help Arcata households conserve energy cheaply and effectively. Groves supports making city events "Zero Waste" events. This means composting at the North Country Fair and using biodegradable utensils instead of plastic. Groves likes the idea of a sanitation plant for Arcata where glass bottles could be cleaned and used again, eliminating long distance trucking of glass. REUSE FIRST, THEN RECYCLE! Supports Affordable Housing Programs With Arcata's property values skyrocketing, the city needs programs that support affordable housing. Harmony Groves will further the city's already progressive policy of providing affordable housing by supporting inclusionary zoning and other programs like the First Time Homebuyer Program. Supports Bicycle and Pedestrian Infrastructure in Arcata Safe roads for bicyclists and pedestrians calms traffic and improves our quality of life. Pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure will increase public health and safety. As gas prices continue to soar, bicycle use becomes more attractive to Arcatans. Harmony Groves will ensure that Arcata builds on our already successful programs, like striped bicycle lanes, bicycle libraries, and connecting the Hammond Trail to town. Supports Local Businesses Groves supports the Business Improvement District and will give Arcata's local businesses the support they need to succeed. Groves looks forward to working on the Economic Strategic Plan City-Wide Strategies and lending further support to the Arcata Economic Development Corporation, which helps small businesses across several counties. Experience in Leadership and Government Groves has lobbied for statewide bicycle legislation, worked for afterschool programs at the Arcata Bike Library, fought for Children's Health Rights, worked with Administration at HSU to save Campus Recycling, and has worked with Heal the Bay and the Kirstie Alley Fundation on environmental education and repair. GROVES WILL WORK ON THE LAND USE CODES TO INSURE EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE GENERAL PLAN 2020. "I am a working woman who will be professional and approachable as a city council member in Arcata. I ask for your First Vote on November 2nd, 2004."-Harmony Groves |
