I have lived in Clovis all my life. My family has lived in Clovis since my parents Guadalupe and Celia Flores married in January 1956. My father as a single man came to California looking for work in 1954 and it was by word of mouth that he was told of the opportunities for employment in Clovis, CA. After his marriage, he brought his wife to Clovis. Clovis has been their home ever since.
I was born in Clovis, the hospital that was in downtown Clovis on Pollasky Avenue where the Educational Credit Union stands today. I have five brothers, that have provided support to me as I pursue my goal to being a Clovis School Board member. All my brothers and their families live in Clovis except two.
I have seen Clovis grow and change. I remember downtown Clovis being the center of the community. I attended Weldon Elementary and Clark Intermediate School. I was the first class when Clark opened up. I have lived all my life within the boundary areas that I want to represent. I have two daughters that will be attending Clovis High School. Celia will be an 11th grader and Gabriella a 9th grader. Both my daughters are involved in colorguard and orchestra.
My main reason for running stems from an editorial I read in the Clovis Independent back in 1999. It stated that there is no interest in serving or participating in the electoral process. Well, there is interest. There does not have to be a problem to consider the idea of serving on the board. It's time for a change, a new voice for parents. This is a position tht should not be taken lightly, because we are the representatives elected by the community. I care very much what happens in the school district. I really want to be the representative of the parents and students of trustee area #5. I will work hard to represent them and take into account their concerns before any major decisions are made.
I also bring my work experience for the past ten years I've worked for Fresno County Economic Opportunities Commission Head Start Pre-School Program. I supervise six satellite offices, fifty-five staff members and serve over 500 children. The Home Base option of Head Start provides services to the whole family. The Home Visitor comes to the home on a weekly basis bringing pre-school curriculum and the comprehensive services that Head Start offers.
I also manage curriculum, staff assignments, budgets and the overall functions of the Home Base program as Interim Home Base Director. I enjoy my job and I believe that it as well as my life's experiences have prepared me to serve you well in this position.
I participated in the first Citizen's Academy by the City of Clovis and I am an active board member of Our Lady Perpetual Help Church - Guadalupe Society.
Lastly, I am a proud family member of La Posada Restaurant which was established in 1978 by my parents. I have been instrumental in organizing through La Posada for Safari Night and Christmas at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo.
I respectfully ask for your vote on November 2, 2004 and in advance I thank you for your trust and confidence. I want to be your voice.
