DANVILLE TOWN COUNCIL Councilmember Andersen was appointed to the Danville Town Council on August 5, 2003 in a unanimous vote by the Town Council to fill the vacancy left by Supervisor Millie Greenberg. Candace quickly got up to speed on Danville's issues. Her Town Council assigments have included serving on the following:
Candace continues to have a positive working relationship with Town staff and each of her fellow councilmembers. MORGAN HILL CITY COUNCIL Councilmember Andersen served on the Morgan Hill City Council just before returning to Danville, from January 1993-December 1994, having been appointed under similar circumstances to her appointment in Danville. When it came time to run for her seat in Morgan Hill, Candace's husband Phil was presented with a job opportunity which would bring their family back to Danville. They decided that Danville was where they needed to raise their family. While serving on the Morgan Hill City Council Candace received awards for her work in improving parks, starting a City-wide arboretum, implementing a graffiti eradication program, and for supporting historic preservation. Candace served on Morgan Hill's Legal Oversight Committee, Measure P (growth control) implementation committee, Public Television Advisory Committee, and Gang Task Force Steering Committee. Candace also worked on regional issues in Santa Clara County, serving on Transportation, Legislative, Housing and Community Development Committees. Prior to her appointment to the Morgan Hill City Council Candace served on the Morgan Hill Parks and Recreation Commission and the Rent Stabilization (Mobile Home Park) Commission. Candace's experience and training in the rapidly growing City of Morgan Hill has provided an opportunity to bring fresh ideas, a different way of doing things in Danville. ATTORNEY LICENSED TO PRACTICE LAW IN CALIFORNIA (1988) and HAWAII (1985) Councilmember Andersen has put her legal career on hold to raise her family. She keeps her California license active, occasionally handling pro bono cases. She furthers her training with Continuing Legal Education Courses. Candace began her legal career as an Appellate Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in her hometown of Honolulu, arguing criminal appeals (prosecuting criminals) before the Hawaii State Supreme Court and the Hawaii Intermediate Court of Appeals. These advocacy skills have been helpful in representing Danville's position on regional issues. After moving to California Candace worked for the Morgan Hill law firm of Sullivan & Bassett, handling a wide range of civil matters. Her practice included cases related to zoning and land use. Candace received her Juris Doctorate (Law Degree) from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University in 1995. She also studied law at the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii. B.A. IN PUBLIC POLICY Councilmember received of Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Policy (Political Science) from Brigham Young University in 1982 COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER
Councilmember Andersen was raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and first came to Danville in 1983 to meet her husband's family. She is married to Phil Andersen, who grew up in Danville and graduated from Monte Vista High School in 1974. His family arrived in Danville 35 years ago, in 1969. Following their marriage in 1983, Phil and Candace spent a great deal of time in Danville. They admired the beautiful parks and the way in which Danville was carefully being developed to preserve open space and keep hillsides free from development. They hoped to permanently return someday. After living in Honolulu, followed by a move to Morgan Hill, they had the opportunity to move back to Danville in 1995. They did not hesitate to do so. Danville is where they wanted to raise their family. Candace and Phil are the parents of six children, who range in age from 6 to 19. Their five younger children + Sam, Elisabeth, Mike, Melanie and Steve + attend Sycamore Valley Elementary, Charlotte Wood Middle and San Ramon Valley High Schools. Their oldest son PJ (San Ramon Valley High School, 2003) just completed his freshman year at Brigham Young University + Provo, Utah, and will be spending the next two years serving as a missionary in Trujillo, Peru. |
