Mayor Janet Lockhart Dublin, California Janet Lockhart was first elected to the Dublin City Council in 1996. She served as Vice Mayor of the City of Dublin from 1998 until her appointment as Mayor in October, 2001. Ms. Lockhart succeeded Mayor Guy Houston who resigned his office to run for the State Assembly. Prior to her election to the City Council, Janet was a member of the Board of Directors of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce for several years, serving as President of the Board in 1995. Her strong commitment to the community has included employment as a school librarian, owner of a small business, and published author of children's books. Public education has always been an issue of importance for Janet who was a founding member of Dublin Partners in Education, a non- profit organization dedicated to improving educational opportunities and forging partnerships between business and schools. Janet's favorite motto is "Good Schools Mean Good Business". Prepared to lead the Dublin community through the strenuous efforts of providing affordable housing, caring for the environment, and using private investment not public tax dollars to redevelop areas of the community, Janet's participation on regional boards related to transportation, waste management, local land planning and historic preservation have all provided her with the information and experience necessary to make a difference. Mayor Lockhart is the 2003 recipient of the Outstanding Local Government Official presented by the Alameda County Tobacco Control Coalition and the 2004 Easter Seals Bay Area Champion Award for her advocacy for adequate public and private community based services for individuals with disabilities. Janet is currently serving as President of the Mayors' Conference of Alameda County in addition to being Vice Chair of the LAFCo Board for Alameda County. She also serves on numerous local and regional committees. Janet and her husband Steve have been married for almost 40 years and have lived in Dublin for the past 32 years. Both Steve and Janet are very active in many civic organizations including Dublin Sister City Association, Dublin Historical Preservation Association, and the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Janet enjoys spending time with her three children, five grandchildren, and close friends. Writing and traveling are two other favorites. |
