John Carcione is a Democrat running for State Assembly, District 21. He is the current President of the West Bay Sanitary District, and also a court-appointed Child Advocate. John graduated from Bellarmine College Preparatory, Georgetown University, and the University of California Hastings College of the Law. He and his wife Kelly live in Menlo Park, John's hometown. Corruption-busting local elected leader In 1997, voters in San Mateo County elected John Carcione to the Board of the West Bay Sanitary District. He defeated a 20 year incumbent with an impressive, grassroots campaign that pledged to tackle corruption and conflicts of interest. John Carcione led a sweeping reform effort that brought new leadership to the agency, permitted the unionization of district employees, and improved environmental programs. In 2001, voters in San Mateo County re-elected John Carcione to serve as President. We not only support Carcione, but we thank him for fighting what, at times, was probably a difficult battle." - Palo Alto Daily News, 2001 Advocate for abused and neglected children After volunteering as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for an at-risk 16 year old, John Carcione was hired as Advocate Supervisor at Child Advocates of San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. John was responsible for volunteer training and oversight. Child Advocates is the only non-profit organization in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, appointed by the court in accordance with state statute, to advocate for the best interest of children. To learn more, visit: http://www.cadvocates.org Grandson of the "Green Grocer" John Carcione is the grandson of Bay area legend, Joe Carcione, the "Green Grocer" on TV. He was a passionate consumer advocate, and fighting for public interest is a Carcione family tradition. John's father, Joseph Jr., is a prominent local consumer attorney who has fought against manufacturers of defective and dangerous products. His mother, Bobbie, has served as a volunteer Teacher's Aide and has been an active leader in school and church activities. John's brother, Joe III, owns and operates two small businesses in downtown Menlo Park - a juice bar and a sports card shop - and has been a volunteer coach for several youth teams in the community. Deep roots in the community John's maternal grandfather, Hugh Mullin, Jr., became one of the youngest judges appointed to the bench, at age 29 in 1935. He was re-elected for three more terms in San Mateo County. Helen Patch Mullin, John's grandmother, served as a registered nurse and earned a Masters degree from Berkeley in 1933. John's aunt, Barbara Carcione Erle, served as a schoolteacher in San Mateo County. John's uncle, Hugh Mullin III, serves as a Superior Court Judge in Santa Clara County.
