I agree with many educators that this is the most sweeping intrusion into state and local control of public education in the history of our nation.
All school systems want and accept accountablity and standards. Local schools, governed by locally elected trustees, know better what their communities need and desire than any bureaucrats sitting in Washington, D.C. Those of us with years of experience in our communitiy's public schools are more aware of the demographics, economic needs, and aspirations of our students and their parents. We are alrady responsible for the standards we establish and monitor; we know and respect the need for maximum graduation goals, excellence in our teaching staff and a safe environment in which to learn. For the Federal government to encroach on the 50 states' top-down requirements for "accounability" when the national budget is out of control, homeland security has each of us running scared, and still claim that "less governmnt is best" is beyond my understanding.I don't beleive that this is what the Founders had on their minds some 228 years ago. I, as well as all other school trustees, am accountable at the voting polls each time our names appear on the election ballots. We have no need for additional rules from Washington without the consent and advice of those who are most affected. Intrusion by any ther name would be equally unacceptable.
