Improve local transit; Provide traffic congestion reliefBy Harold C. BrownCandidate for Supervisor; County of Marin; Supervisorial District 2 | |

Traffic congestion is the number one problem in Marin. It will continue to be so until we deal with it head on and in a substantial way. I firmly believe that the problem can be addressed if this county can find the will to make it happen. We need a feasible, functional, efficient transit system if we want to reduce traffic. To accomplish this, the voters of Marin will need to pass a transit tax. Until that time, we must address traffic congestion as best we can. We know that more than 20% of morning peak traffic is school related. I have put considerable effort into finding ways to reducing that congestion. Over the past several years I have worked closely with schools, community organizations, and transit agencies to increase student carpooling and use of mass transit, as well as encourage walking and bike riding to school. Several years ago I helped bring Safe Routes to Schools to Marin. Last year I took the lead in implementing the "Ride and Roll" bus program which provides free bus service for students throughout Marin. Since the inception of the pilot program in February of 2003, over 120,000 free rides on Golden Gate Transit busses have been given to students from 42 schools. |
