Having lived in Fresno all his life, attending local schools and graduating from San Joaquin Memorial High School gave Sal a deep appreciation for Fresno's diverse community, its rich history and its bright future.

After attending Fresno City College in 1968, Sal was employed by Berven Rug Mills in its Varidye Division and eventually was promoted to the position of foreman, supervising approximately 120 employees. In 1974 Sal was involved in a partnership with his brother John, owning commercial property and apartments. In 1984 Sal started his own marketing consulting company, focusing on non profit health centers, ballot initiatives and political campaigns.

In 1995, Sal was elected to the Fresno City Council, representing District 5, the area he grew up in and still resides in with his wife Lola. Sal served 2 - 4 year terms, making Fresno history by being the first incumbent Councilmember to run unopposed for re-election. Another part of local history was made in 1977 by Sal when he was elected the first Council President under the strong Mayor form of Government.

Some of Sal's accomplishments while serving as Councilmember for District 5 include:

  • Acquiring $1.5 million to open Fresno's first Senior Citizens Resource Center.
  • Donation of 13 acres of land and acquiring $1.5 million to construct Pilibos Park, Fresno's first 4 field Soccer Complex
  • Removal of over 7,000 inoperable vehicles from residences during his 8 years in office.
  • Rezoned 1,550 multiple-residential lots(apartments) to only allow construction of single family homes.
  • Acquired $80,000 to repair and maintain the Calwa Park swimming pool (the only public swimming pool in the area).
  • Worked with the property owners to demolish and rebuild the Eastgate Shopping Center into a thriving center serving the entire community.

Sal is very proud of his accomplishments and knows that without the help and support of the community, none of these accomplishments would have become a reality.
