Greg Young was born 36 years ago in Los Angeles, California. He moved to the Bay Area in 1985 when he attended the University of California at Berkeley. Greg graduated with a B.A. in Mass Communications in May 1989. Greg's commitment to education continued as he completed his M.A. in Counseling Psychology from the University of San Francisco in 1997, and he received his MBA from St. Mary's College in Moraga in 2000. Greg's business experience is vast. During his junior year of college at U.C. Berkeley, he was offered an intership with Procter and Gamble. Management was so impressed with his professionalism, work ethic, and business acumen that he was extended an offer to work for the company at the end of his intership. As a result, upon graduation Greg began his career at P&G as a Sales Representative calling on grocery retail stores in the Bay Area. Greg has also served as an Account Executive for American Express Company in San Francisco where he was responsible for marketing the Travelers Cheque product to the major financial service institutions in the Western Region of the United States. Currently, Greg is the Northern California Director for Community Development for Wells Fargo. His role is to meet with local non-profits, community based organizations, local elected officials and supervisors to discuss the ways Wells Fargo can support the community development activities of these organizations particularly as they relate to affordable housing, small business development, and job creation. In March 2003, Greg was featured in the East Bay Business Times "Top 40 Most Influential Business People Under 40". In addition to his business experience, Greg has worked in the non-profit and educational arena. He has served as a Science Coordinator for the Student Learning Center at U.C. Berkeley assisting underrepresented students in the sciences with study skills strategies to ensure their academic success. He has served as a counselor with the Youth Employment Partnership organization in Oakland working with at-risk youth between the ages of 14-21 assisting them with education, employment, and life skills training. He also has served as the Associate Director for the MESA Program (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) at San Francisco State. This program worked with underrepresented students from K-12 encouraging them to pursue careers in science and engineering by providing after-school and Saturday Academy programs. This was a partnership between U.C. Berkeley, San Francisco State, and the San Francisco Unified School District. Greg has also had the opportunity to work on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. In 1994, he began an internship in the office of Senator Edward M. Kennedy. After just 3 months of interning, Greg was hired on as the Chief Legislative Clerk of the Labor and Human Resources Committee which Senator Kennedy chaired. He was responsible for processing all bills and nominations that came before this committee and contacting representatives from both sides of the aisle. After the shift in leadership in November 1994, Greg became a Labor Staff Assistant for Senator Kennedy and worked on issues dealing with minimum wage, baseball strike, and the overhaul of the federal job training bill. Greg's community experience is vast. He currently serves on the board of the following organizations: California Association for Local Economic Development (Sacramento), Center for Fathers and Families, East Bay Leadership Foundation, and the Urban Financial Services Coalition (President). He is currently on the Martinez Planning Commission and the Contra Costa County Library Commission. He and his wife are Founding Members of the John Muir Festival Center in Martinez.
