Common Goals and Objectives
As president of the Alameda County Board of Education for 2003/2004,the Board has made significant progress in establishing a working relationship that fosters the effectiveness and growth of the students and programs we serve. I will continue on this path as we work toward meeting the mission and goals of the Board and the Superintendent of Alameda County Schools Sheila Jordan. We are facing a critical time in education as state lawmakers scramble to pass a budget that is certain to strain already limited resources to our schools. The budget crisis comes at a time when the Alameda County Office of Education's (ACOE) responsibilities are growing as a result of new legislation, state and federal mandates, and a need for critical services. As a board we must continue to support ACOE to ensure the fiscal health of our districts.

In the same way we strive for financial accountability, we need to continue the push for academic accountability. To meet increasing expectations and demands board members have the opportunity to work with ACOE to expand local and regional collaborations. We can leverage our expertise and resources in order to benefit the children we serve in public, court and community schools throughout Alameda County.

It's not enough to tell our teachers to do a better job, we must provide them with the tools. Through innovative programs and partnerships, ACOE is responding to the direct needs of our teachers and students. ACOE has a great advantage in this regard by centralizing key services that districts are unable to provide. Using a regional approach, we are able to capitalize on economies of scale in professional development, support services, planning and purchasing. The end result is a savings to districts that can be applied to the classroom.

I have spent the last 15 years working in public education as an advocate for children and families. I believe with good leadership our vision of a quality education for all students will go forward.
