GAIL JONES--as an elected member since 1996 of the Alameda County Board of Education works diligently to champion quality public education for today's youth
For the past eight years I have actively and extensively advocated at local, county, state and federal levels for the basics such as safety, and enhancements such as extra curricular programs:
- Character education in the classroom, setting ground rules for classroom behavior
- Improved salaries for teachers and school social workers
- Affordable housing for teachers
- More local control of funds for education and school facilities
- Funding for after school programs
- Support for bond measure on 2002 statewide ballot to be spent on school facilities
- New textbooks, extra curricular activities facility storage, and clean bathrooms
- After school programs funding
- A state wide comprehensive and sustainable approach to teacher quality, student support, parental participation, before and after school academic and recreational programs, and clean, functional, attractive and safe facilities
Speaking, participating, and supporting district and Alameda County
- Tackled negative speech, verbal abuse and bullying of students by introducing a resolution which resulted in an approved joint resolution by the Alameda County Board of Education to implement procedures against verbal abuse in the schools
- Introduced 3 workshops to enhance Board communication
- Instrumental as a catalyst for the adoption of a resolution for a Nutrition Program in Alameda County schools
- In favor of People United for a Better Oakland to not give up on the public school system; in favor of maintaining unified school district in Fremont thereby avoiding loss of resources
- As member of board served on numerous committees: International Sudies, Curriculum (chairperson), Budget, Policy, Redistricting
- Served as Second VP on the Alameda County Board of Education
- California County Board of Education Delegate/California School Board Association Director, Region 7
- Speaker at 1998 California School Board Association Annual Conference; attended many workshops and conferences in Sacramento and numerous others within and without California including an education conference in Washington, D.C. to complete certification for Master Boardsmanship
