Improving Educational AchievementBy Gay Plair CobbCandidate for Member; Alameda County Board of Education; Trustee Area 2 | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
The County Office of Education must increase its focus and resources to improve the educational outcomes of its students.Under the current leadership of the Alameda County Office of Education, achievement scores (API) of our students have declined over the last two years --- making our scores the lowest of other juvenile court schools in the Bay Area, and among the lowest in the state. Unless this situation is reversed, our most "at-risk" young people will be doomed for failure as a quality education is strongly correlated with future success in life. I have demonstrated my commitment to reversing the current situation and have advocated for an open process which invites parents, guardians, the faith-based community and other advocates to collaborate with the board in devising new strategies to address this issue. The transition of students from the county schools back to their home districts is also problematic, resulting in increased truancy. The county superintendent needs to dedicate staff who will develop a more structured re-entry plan and improve communication with the student's home district. |
