Foster City School BoundariesBy Mel ThompsonCandidate for Board Member; San Mateo-Foster City School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
It is time to re-examine Foster City school boundaries and attendance policies at Brewer Island school.I believe that attendance boundaries and policies for our Foster City schools, particularly Brewer Island, must be resolved in a fair manner while respecting the legal requirements for operating magnet schools. The attendance boundary policies for Brewer Island Elementary have been a long-standing source of dissatisfaction in the Foster City community, and the total student population in Foster City is expected to decline over the next five years which will affect school attendance. This is a good time to re-examine boundaries and attendance policies. The previous Administration was unwilling to open a discussion about Foster City boundary adjustments, but the present Administration has said that this is something that should be brought up for re-examination. The District also now has the data and software tools to support the process of re-examining school boundaries. I support having the Board and Administration re-examine modifying Foster City elementary school boundaries to reflect local needs and in light of our new demographic information. We should also re-examine Brewer Island's status as a magnet school as part of this process. MT |
