The Real Fire Safety ProblemBy Deborah R. RuddockCandidate for Board Member; Coastside County Water District; 4 Year Term | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Our water distribution system delivers substandard fire flow pressure in downtown and our older neighborhoodsReplacing the District's main water transmission line along SR 1 with a gravity flow pipeline (instead of a pump driven system) will provide increased reliability in fighting fires because it can still deliver in power outages. However, even with the larger pipe, a significant portion of our service area will continue to suffer from substandard fire flow pressure. The main problem "zone" includes downtown, Ocean Colony, and our older resdidential neighborhoods in east and west central Half Moon Bay. Needed improvements generally include replacing 2-inch pipes, including 2-inch dead-end pipes, and 4-inch pipes with 6- and 8-inch pipes as appropriate. The District needs a comprehensive plan for conducting fire flow tests and prioritizing replacements and other improvements for providing increased fire safety in our historic downtown and our residential subdivisions. This effort will require collaboration with the Fire District, the HMB City Council, the County of San Mateo, Coastside citizens and others to be realistic, cost-effective, and successful. If elected to the CCWD board, I will make fire safety a priority. |
