"We can achieve excellence in education through making our children our number one priority"

This was my promise to you as I began my service on the board in 1995. There is some good news to share. Our strategic plan reflects the high district standards which are aligned with state curriculum standards. The dedication of our employees and support of the school community is reflected in our schools receiving recognition at both the state and national levels. Our curriculum driven budget model received a Golden Bell Award as an exemplar program from the California State School Boards Association (CSBA). We successfully passed a school facilities bond in 1996. Measure A Citizens Oversight Committee reports that over the years, we have carefully spent these funds as promised, improving our facilities. Our test scores show continuing improvement. All of our elementary school which are in this year's cycle for receiving California Distinguished Schools designation are eligible to apply. Our District serves a diverse population with as many as 42% of our students listing English as a second language their homes
In 2003, the children of our district continue to be my priority. Currently I am Board Vice President, involved in advocacy at county and state levels. I have been elected by my peers to serve in the Delegate Assembly, policy body of CSBA, and CSBA has appointed me to serve as their liaison on educational issues to local legislators. I have completed the CSBA Masters of Governance, a two year program studying professional standards of school board members.
If citizen governance is the cornerstone of democracy, then the school board reflects this opportunity at its best
It is the one elected position whose advocacy is for the children of our community. Now, in these times of challenge, I cannot walk away. It is my heartfelt desire to take the experience and knowledge I have gained and guide an effective governance team to guide us through these rough times.
We need to wisely allocate our resources to support our educational programs as well as leverage alternative sources of funding. We must strengthen our communication to our parents and community, providing opportunities for dialogue about the budget decisions that need to be made. We can enhance student achievement by educating the parents about our high expectations and specific grade level standards. We can make measured progress in achieving our strategic plan goals.
It has been an honor to serve our children and our community during my two terms on the Sunnyvale School Board. I seek your vote of continued support.
