What steps would you take to mitigate the effects of change to the federal welfare laws?
Better skills training programs for all.

For women: a women-mentoring-women program to help guide their transition from welfare to the work force.

For all: more affordable, more available, quality daycare for working parents. This is a critical need in our nation and one that greatly affects those on welfare, many of whom lack the skills to obtain jobs that pay a living wage. Wages that allow them to place their children in daycare while they work. Often, the prospects of securing daycare for those individuals, are so overwhelming and impossible that it is far easier to remain unemployed and on welfare.

To help those individuals, I propose opening our school sites for evening or weekend job skills training. Yes, Sunnyvale has a Community Center located at Remington Park to handle some of these concerns. However, school sites are located throughout the city in more convenient locations for the general public. We have the buildings and the computer equipment already in place so the cost to the city is minimal.

The rewards to our residents are priceless.
