Hull Middle SchoolBy Claude TodoroffCandidate for Governing Board Member; Torrance Unified School District | |

We need to get the residents around Hull Middle School included in the project.I have met with some of the homeowners around Hull Middle School and listened to their concerns. They are interested in upgrading the school but their concern is how it will be done. Their primary concern is having a two story structure at the corner of 231st. Street and Arlington. Arlington is a heavily traveled street and the residents fear noice pollution at the school. They also are not happy with the drop-off and pick-up of students being on Arlington. Can you imagine how you would feel if you came out of the front door of your home and saw a two story building looking at you where previously you looked at a playing field and Palos Verdes in the distance? If we allow this to be done to the residents of Hull then TUSD could do a similiar thing to any of the residents next to a local school. Today Hull, tomorrow Anza or Arlington or Jefferson etc.? I am also concerned about the school being partially on a former sump. That will have to be cleaned up at a cost of $1.5 million. When it rains the pollutants not only spread downward but also horizontally. Heidi Ashcraft is quick to point out that the new building will be put where the site is supposedly pollution free. Does this leave the polluted part where the kids get to play? The school is also adjacent to oil wells. What has pumping out oil done to school site? Was water pumped in to replace the oil which would make the soil act like jello in an earthquake. We need to make sure all the necessary geological studies have been done. We don't want the school coming down on the heads of our kids and district employees. Let's not build the Torrance version of L.A. Unified's Belmont High School. Let's built something that is safe and has community support. |
