THE MONROVIA SCHOOL BOARD MUST PROVIDE THE LEADERSHIP THAT ENCOURAGES POSITIVE CHANGE IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND AT EACH SCHOOLBy Ed GilillandCandidate for Governing Board Member; Monrovia Unified School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
The budget crisis alone demands that the leadership provided by the School Board must be better than ever. This is even more critical when the budget crisis is combined with the ever-increasing performance requirements of federal and state mandates (including No Child Left Behind Legislation, and Comite programs). Monrovia Schools cannot advance with weak, ineffective leadership. Each member of the Board, and the Board as a whole must provide a strong new leadership to insure success for each school and for each student in the District. The Board must serve as the catalyst to bring the resources and skills of parents, teachers, school administration, students, City leaders, and community members to help deal with these tough issues and insure the success of every student. The Board must lead schools, parents, and students in a collaborative effort to insure that every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Ed Gililland has a history of recognized leadership. Serving as Engineering Program Leader for the US Forest Service for many year. Ed has developed an ability to bring people together to solve complex problems. Ed was honored for his achievements by being named as the US Forest Service National Engineering Manager of the Year in 1998. Ed has expanded this leadership in his role as a volunteer in the Monrovia Unified School District (MUSD). His continued leadership and involvement provides a strong knowledge of issues and opportunities for improvement that will strengthen Ed's performance as a Member of the School Board. When several local chiropractors pointed out the ongoing health problems experienced by our students as a result of heavy backpacks, Ed spearheaded the parent's successful effort to have lockers reinstalled. Ed is currently chairing the committee to get donations and volunteer labor to build a new building at Monrovia High School to house a fund raising snack bar and public restrooms for the stadium and sports complex. Ed is currently involved with many aspects of school activities, and has held the following positions in Monrovia School Organizations within the past five years:
