Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Brooke Epperly

Candidate for
Governing Board Member; Pacific Union School District

This information is provided by the candidate

I grew up in Humboldt County. My parents taught me that to be a member of a community, you must contribute to the community. I have lived in Arcata for 22 years. My husband and I have 3 children, ages 16, 11, and 8. When my oldest child entered Pacific Union School, I realized that the school would be the center of his universe and that is where my priorities should be. For the past 11 years I have made Pacific Union School one of my priorities. I have gotten to know the people who make Pacific Union a great school. I know there are challenges ahead, but there will also be great opportunities. I want to be part of both of them.

I am looking forward to the completion of our construction project. The voters in the Pacific Union District overwhelmingly supported this bond and have been waiting for the results. The first building is finished and the other two have been started. I believe the public will be pleased with what they paid for.

Pacific Union is looking toward the future. I want to be part of the process of mapping out that future. I believe that my experience, commitment to the school, and willingness to work long and hard, will be an asset to this process. I have tried to listen to other points of view. I may not always agree with them, but I do try to respectfully listen.

I believe that Pacific Union School is a great school. I believe we will continue to be a great school no matter what happens in Sacramento. I want to continue to be part of this excellent educational experience. As a Board member I have dealt with declining enrollment, reduced budgets, contract negotiations, school safety, and mandated testing. I believe that some consistancy in a Board makes for a more efficient Board. I believe I have proven over the last four years that I am the right person for this job.

I have talked a great deal about myself and Pacific Union School, but there is something that we should not forget, the children. Making sure that all children receive an excellent education should be every community's goal. Take an interest in your school.
