The Low Down on Education

By Kurt E. "Tachikaze" Rightmyer

Candidate for Recall of Gray Davis; State of California

Public school administrators are wasting billions of dollars. It starts in kindergarten and goes right up to the university level.
Prop. 98 mandates that at least $43 billion be spent on K-12 education annually, though the actual figure is more like $54 billion. That comes out to $9000 per pupil per year. Yet teachers are shelling out anywhere from $2000-$5000 annually out of their own pockets for their students. What's up with that? For starters, only a miniscule fraction of that $9000 ever makes it to the classroom. The rest is eaten up by administrative waste on providing a "progressive" education. Teachers have to scrounge for money to buy lunch while districts hire consultants to roam the hallways and classrooms for a few weeks at a cost of about $100,000 a pop. These consultants inform the administrators of how well teachers are following the latest fad teaching methods and how well they are implementing the latest socialist multicultural theories. It's a never ending cycle. Each Fall, experienced teachers with twenty or more years under their belts are put through the wringer because "everything they've learned no longer applies." Have you ever wondered why 40% of L.A. classrooms lack enough books, yet the warehouses are stacked to the ceilings? Now you know. All those textbooks that don't employ the latest fad methods and ideologies are deemed obsolete, and unworthy of usage. So the kids have no books instead.
