We can cut serious crime in half in California by decriminalizing victimless crimes. This will also solve our Budget Crisis.
All the experts agree that drug addicts financing their illicit habits commit most serious crimes in California. By decriminalizing drugs, as well as gambling and prostitution, we can cut serious crime in half. This is not the same as legalization. The government must strictly control victimless crimes and make sure that minors are protected.
Decriminalizing victimless crimes will also help solve our Budget Crisis. First, it will save billions of dollars that are currently being wasted arresting, prosecuting, and incarcerating victimless criminals. Legislating morality didn't work with alcohol during Prohibition, and it won't work now with drugs, gambling, and prostitution. Second, after decriminalizing victimless crimes, we can raise billions of dollars in new taxes. The State of Nevada receives most of its income from taxing casino gambling. We can do the same thing in California, on a grander scale than Las Vegas. We can also tax the use of drugs and prostitution. Decriminalizing victimless crimes gives us a two-for-one. It solves both our crime and budget problems.
