I was born in 1949 in San Francisco. At an early age I caught the political bug and volunteered in a presidential campaign. By age 15 I was the captain of several precincts in San Francisco. Then I founded a political organization that spread to high schools throughout the Bay Area. I majored in Government at college, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of San Francisco in 1970. Then I turned to the teaching profession. During my nine year career as a school teacher, I also earned a Master's Degree in Secondary Education from San Francisco State University. I also studied crime, which was a problem of particular interest. I co-founded Citizens Against Crime, Inc., a non-profit, and campaigned statewide for a reduction in crime. |
