Sylvia Scott-Hayes--A Proven Leader Has clearly demonstrated a strong commitment to students and educational excellence. Has been a strong advocate for all employees of the L.A. College District. Serves on the Classified Staff Issues Committee, Chair of the Accreditation and Planning Committee, and has worked closely with college faculty and administrators to improve student support services to ensure students become independent and confident learners. Accomplishments and experience include: · Board member: Los Angeles Community College District Board. Elected to the Board in June 1999. During first term as trustee, the Board accomplished the following: ¨Established fair collective bargaining agreements for all employees. Improved working conditions for administrators, staff and faculty. ¨Placed Proposition A on the ballot in 2001. ¨Hired new college presidents for five of the nine colleges. ¨Increased class offerings and increased student enrollment by an average of 13%. ¨Increased visibility and public awareness of the importance of L.A. community colleges. · President of the Board (July 2001- June 2002). Under my leadership, the LACCD Board: ¨ Established a "Project Labor Agreement" to ensure fair and equitable wages for all who work on Prop A Projects. This agreement also requires outreach and training opportunities for residents surrounding our college communities. ¨ Established a "Sustainable" green building policy for all new construction of building. Received national recognition and honors for developing model policy. ¨ Established a progressive "Energy" policy that requires the use of solar and renewable energy systems for all new buildings at colleges. · Honored by Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) for being first Latina to serve as President of the Board of Trustees. In addition, raised $ 45, 000 for student scholarships. HSF matched amount and named scholarship in my name. Scholarship available to community college students who are transferring to university. · College Teacher: As part-time university instructor, have taught composition to lower and upper-division students. Expertise in working with non-native students. As teacher goal is to ensure students are proficient in writing well-organized research papers and possess excellent research skills. · Educator: Extensive experience in higher education. Over the past twenty years have worked as Director of Learning Resource Center, Associate Director of Writing Center, Coordinator of Learning Technology Lab, and Outreach Coordinator for students interested in entering medical and allied health professions. · Administrator: Director of the University Testing Center at California State University, Los Angeles. Work and assist freshman and community college transfer students to successfully adjust the 4-year university environment. · Commissioner: L.A. County Judicial Procedures Commission, L.A. County Human Relations Commission. · Mentor and Board Memberr: Gang Youth Bridging Project, CSULA Scholar-Athlete Program, Little Sister Project, Young Women At Risk Program, Friends of the L.A. City Commission on the Status of Women. · Union Member: California State Employees Association for 22 years. · M.A. - Urban Education, B.A.- Sociology California State University, Los Angeles.
