- Has over 35 years of experience as an education advocate and is the Senior Member of the Los Angeles City Board Of Education for 16 years
- Since 1987 has had a Parent Community Advisory Committee and a Teachers Advisory Committee
- Provided funding for the Kindergarten Intervention Program (KIP) which addresses the needs of at-risk children.
- Established the School Safety and Security Task Force to study how to make LAUSD schools safer for children.
- Brought Phonics reading programs back to the schools resulting in improved scores throughout the district.
- Member of California Community Colleges Board Of Governors (Appointed in 1999 by Governor Gray Davis)
