Associate Justice William D. Stein was appointed to the Court of Appeal by Governor George Deukmejian in 1988 and was confirmed by the electorate at the November 1990 election. Prior to his appointment to the appellate court, Justice Stein served on both the Superior and Municipal Courts of the City and County of San Francisco. He was appointed to the Municipal Court in 1984, elevated to the Superior Court in 1985 and elected to a full term on that court at the June 1986 election. In 1987 Justice Stein was appointed by Chief Justice Malcolm Lucas to the California Judicial Council where he served as a member of the committees on Court Management and State Funding of Trial Courts. In 1990 Chief Justice Lucas appointed him to the Federal-State Judicial Council and recently Chief Justice George appointed Justice Stein to the Appellate Court Advisory Committee of the Judicial Council. Justice Stein is a fourth generation native San Franciscian, educated in the City's parochial and public schools. He became an attorney in 1966 and was admitted to practice before the United States District Court of the Northern District of California, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the United States Supreme Court and the United States Court of Military Appeals. After graduation from law school, Justice Stein joined the California Attorney General's Office where he served as a Deputy Attorney General under Attorney Generals Thomas C. Lynch and Evelle J. Younger. He specialized in appellate cases and has argued several times before the United States Supreme Court. Attorney General George Deukmejian promoted him to Senior Assistant Attorney General and, before being appointed to the bench, he served as Chief Assistant Attorney General under John K. Van de Kamp. Justice Stein is a life member of the University of California Alumni Association and belongs to the San Francisco Opera Association, the St. Francis Yacht Club and the Knights of St. John. |
