By Katherine H. "Kathy" Smith

Candidate for State Superintendent of Public Instruction; State of California

This information is provided by the candidate
Creating an academic environment improves student behavior and fosters serious scholorship.
The following are my accomplishments. They have proven to be effective in our large multicultural school district. So effective, in fact, that they are being adopted in school districts all over the Nation

1) Continue to concentrate on Basics. The "3-R's" are still Job One. 2) Statewide recognition of the value of a daily Moment of Silence. 3) Post the Golden Rule in all classrooms. 4) Expand academic attire. Dress changes behavior. 5) Professional attire for teachers. This improves classroom decorum. 6) A five-minute clean-up bell after lunch teaches responsibility and respect. 7) Clean restrooms. Shows respect for students and instills respect for property. 8) Teach "manners" and "etiquette" to build respect for one another. 9) Establish "Character Counts" programs to instill ethical behavior. 10) Conceived the idea for Oxford Academy in 1997. It ranks third scholastically in California. 11) Placement of defibrillators in District schools.
