Jane Howard on California's Budget CrisisBy Jane HowardCandidate for Member; California State Assembly; District 28 | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
California faces a serious fiscal crisis. There are no easy solutions, but we must begin the process of restoring fiscal responsibility to state government.Current projections show that if nothing changes, the state will have a $51.6 billion deficit in five years. That works out to a bill of $1472 for every man, woman and child in California. The crisis is not a revenue shortage but a spending glut. Increasing taxes will only worsen the problem and drive businesses from the state. We must set priorities and reduce spending while avoiding tax increases that penalize working families and drive businesses elsewhere. We must set new state-spending limits and require a common sense connection between that limit and actual spending. We must discontinue automatic budgetary increases and require accountability for yearly funding of government departments. I will support the proposed Constitutional Amendment that allows state spending to grow at the same pace as personal income and prohibits the government from spending money it doesn't have. I also support SB1428 that establishes a commission to identify for closure unnecessary and wasteful state bureaucracies. |
