Public SafetyBy Carol DeanCandidate for Member, City Council; City of Santa Rosa | |

Rising response times are worrisome and unacceptable.I am very concerned about the rising response times of our public safety personnel which affects everyone who lives and/or works in the city limits. We have a police ratio of 1.18 offiers per 1,000 residents. The recognized recommended ratio is 1.5. Santa Rosa does not provide for the needed officers in its budget, but officers are currently on mandadory overtime. Council goals are for police to respond to a 911 emergency in 6 minutes. Currently the average response time is 9 minutes. That is a long time if someone is threatening you or there is a felony in progress. The council goal for the fire department is 4 minutes for 80% of the 911 calls and they only reach that goal 32% of the time. If you are a heart attack victim or have a house fire, those additional minutes can mean the difference between life or death and the difference between a minor fire and a minor fire. Santa Rosa has not built a new fire station since 1982 yet our population has doubled since then. This concerns me greatly as a private citizen. |
