By Jolanda Schreurs, Ph.D.

Candidate for Board Member; Cabrillo Unified School District

6 School Board Candidates - 2 distinct visions of the future middle school. Three candidates (Jolanda, Dwight & Roy) have a clear, education- student-centered position: Build a modern, new school at a New site, in accordance with the voter-approved bond language of Measure K AND build the school adjacent to a New Boys & Girls Club. Counter to the Bond language, the three LCP candidates want to build at the old site & constrain infrastructure- thereby limiting growth
There are 6 candidates for School Board. Three, myself, Dwight Wilson and Roy Salume have a clear, education and student-centered position- build a modern new school at a New site in accordance with the voter-approved bond language of Measure K AND build a school adjacent to a New Boys & Girls Club. Three other LCP candidates want to revisit the past, go back 7 years, and constrain infrastructure and thereby growth, by building an undersized school at the old undersized location- forfeiting the bond-stipulated conversion to much needed elementary school capacity, costing taxpayers money by forfeiting serviceable existing buildings, destroying athletic fields, subjecting the school district to potential litigation and delays, and preventing the possibility of an adjacent Boys & Girls club.

As a mother, the co-chair of Measure K which raised the $35M for our facilities construction, and as a community member, I want to build a middle school as quickly as feasible. To do that, we need to acknowledge that no one solution is perfect, and that there may be more than one viable solution to building a middle school. We also need to recognize, that the Board serves to provide for the best education possible for our coastside children.
