Leadership That Listens Eileen has brought disparate voices together in order to facilitate decisions and negotiate agreements. She is a proven coalition-builder able to work with a broad range of individuals and interests. In electing Eileen, we will double the number of women on the Board of Supervisors and bring a strong voice of reason and consensus-building to that body. Her public policy experience spans the local, state and federal policy-making arenas. Her work with neighborhoods and community-based issues began more 30 years.

Eileen ran for Supervisor in 2000 as part of the successful effort on the part of communities to take our City back from the current administration. She lost by a mere 712 votes and is now back to lead the City in planning for our future. Eileen will create with you # the voters of District 8 # a vision for a vibrant City that works for us all.

A Commitment to Political Change Eileen's commitment to political change began in the late `60s and early `70s as she began to organize against the war in Vietnam, for women's rights and international peace, and on behalf of disenfranchised communities throughout the country. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and worked there on issues such as public power; housing, planning and zoning; protection of the environment; women's health; lesbian and gay rights; and neighborhood-based concerns in the `70s. She was an early organizer for initial environmental protections in Utah and was both a community organizer and labor negotiator in Salt Lake. Working in Boston in the early `80s, she was the Planning and Development Director for the largest multi-service agency in Chinatown.

In 1986, she turned her attention to HIV/AIDS and worked for 14 years to effect reasonable and progressive public polices on behalf of people with HIV. Much of her work was focused on issues related to privacy and confidentiality, as well as the effect of federal policies on women and children. Her public policy work on health and HIV issues includes the drafting of legislation and the training of women with HIV to become public policy advocates. She has worked in Sacramento and Washington, DC and understands the importance of state and federal support for the needs of San Franciscans. She has published and presented on these issues, most recently at the International AIDS Conference in South Africa in 2000.

Working in electoral politics since moving to San Francisco in 1985, Eileen has continued her community work of three decades within the City's electoral arena. Her campaign themes of today reflect her history of active commitment to those very issues. Her years of coalition-building and grappling with difficult issues and disparate views will enable her to be an effective Supervisor who listens and then leads.
