Dr. Luz Maria "Lucha" Ortega -- Candidate's Statement

I have over 15 years of experience working in higher education-- over ten years in community colleges and five years in a university setting. Below is a summary of my credentials, experience and qualifications in seeking election as a trustee for the Gavilan Joint Community College Board.

As a former San Benito High School trustee, I know the educational needs of our youth. As a current university administrator and Gavilan College trustee, I will continue to work hard to represent the needs of the Gavilan College district. Regardless of the challenge to do more with fewer resources in education, it is still important to provide access to an affordable, high quality education and job training preparation that will meet the needs of students and the job market.

If elected, I would continue to focus on budget responsibility, placing resources in areas of greatest need and benefit to students and the campus community. I would also advocate for classes and services that will be flexible and accessible as well as promote community representation, ensuring that district needs are expressed and addressed by Gavilan College and its board.
