Candidate for
Board Member; Campbell Union School District

I believe that public education is one of the key elements of our democratic society. We must provide a quality education to each child that considers his or her individual learning styles and special needs. Children should be encouraged to work to their potential and given the support they need.

Our children have the right to learn in an environment that is clean, comfortable and safe. We must ensure it is free from bullying so that each child feels safe at school. We must teach respect and foster self-esteem.

I fully support "standards based" learning, but not to the exclusion of common sense. We had our district standards in place long before it was fashionable, or required by state mandate. I feel test scores are just one measure of success. It is important for our students to have the enriching experiences of art projects, music, drama and hands on science activities. My philosophy is that we must educate the whole child and not just "teach to the test". Our eighth grade students go beyond the norm, their "exhibition project" demonstrates that Campbell provides "education beyond the expected". The good news is, the state tests have validated our data, and support our model.

Our schools are successful because of the tradition of community involvement and parent support that they enjoy. We have an outstanding relationship among our employee unions, administration, and board members.
