Political Philosophy for Paul Manansala

The recent events involving Enron, Perot Systems Corp. and the energy crisis make it clear that power generation and delivery belongs to the people. Energy is the lifeblood of modern civilization and giving control of such a basic necessity to the big corporate bosses is unwise to say the least. Can one imagine the Enron executives running SMUD? To say there would be a conflict of interest would be a gross understatement. One could just imagine the types of games they would play. We've already heard of "Death Star" and "Fat Boy," covert operations carried out by the big energy companies to rob Californians of billions of dollars. The adage, "power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely," is perfect for the power market. The big energy bosses are concerned with making profits. Sometimes in that quest the environment, the individual, the society and so on, get trampled on by the corporate interests. What makes SMUD so special is that it is designed to work, at cost, for the good of the people. That's what I intend to maintain at SMUD. A commitment to clean, reliable and affordable energy. SMUD users are not so much customers as owners of the utility. Their views must be respected and their welfare taken to heart. The new SMUD board director must reflect the will of the people. |
