I was raised in Hawaii and witnessed the devastating events of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. I could not finish high school because of the Pearl Harbor Attack. The schools on Oahu were closed. I was on my own at sixteen and went to work in a steam engine round house. I joined the army transport service and then went into the Merchant Marine in time to take part in the Okinawa invasion. I married my wife in 1949 while still in the service. I quit going to sea and settled down after our first child was born. In California, I went to work for Robinson's Department Store as a maintenance supervisor. At this time, I felt I needed to finish my schooling. I graduated from Reseda Adult School (even had a cap and gown). I also attended Community College Classes. I became a Maintenance Supervisor for Robinson's Department Stores for sixteen years. Upon leaving Robinson's, I worked for and elevator installation and repair company until I retired. My wife and I lived in Big Bear City before coming to Calimesa. Anita and I will celebrate 53 years of marriage in October, and we have three grown children. |
