Overview of Lucille Kring's Ideas for Anaheim

By Lucille Kring

Candidate for Mayor; City of Anaheim

This information is provided by the candidate
It has been an honor representing Anaheim residents as your City Councilwoman the past four years. I have worked hard to strengthen police and fire resources, protect taxpayers, improve neighborhoods, protect our public utility, expand library services, create more parks and improve streets, sidewalks and sewers.

I am committed to Anaheim's future. There is much more that I would like to do as your next Mayor! Please read on to learn more.

My husband, Ron, and I have lived in Anaheim since 1989. In 1995 we joined the Chamber of Commerce, and I became a Chamber Ambassador. I was elected Ambassador of the year for 1996-97, having amassed 500 hours of volunteer work in the community. In 1996 I was also elected to the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce and am currently serving my third consecutive term on the board. I believe in giving back to the community, and, as such, I serve on the Foundation Board of the Anaheim Memorial Hospital. I'm on the Advisory Boards of the Anaheim Family YMCA and Leadership Anaheim, on the board of the Canyon Hills Community Council and co-chaired the 2002 Taste of the Canyon. I'm on fundraising committees for MDA and recently was the honorary chairwoman of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society Light the Nite event in Anaheim. As an eight-year cancer survivor, I'm on the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society-North Orange County Unit. And I'm a Rotarian.

I'm running for Mayor because Anaheim needs a Mayor who is a leader, a problem-solver and a consensus-builder. A leader does what is right and fair, even though it may not be the politically expedient thing to do.

I do my homework on issues affecting the city and have tried to balance the rights and needs of the community with those of businesses. I want the best for our city, and my track record on the Council and as a community leader and volunteer have demonstrated my commitment to Anaheim's future.

I support bringing in companies with high-paying jobs that provide the services and products our residents need while increasing our tax base. I recently attended the grand opening of Caliber Collision Centers' new Anaheim location. It is their flagship store and they have committed to hiring only Anaheim residents. We need more businesses like this to support our workforce.

I'm supportive of a one-stop shop for businesses and developers coming into the city, saving them AND THE CITY time and money. Let's make it easier for people to do business in Anaheim. We need political will and leadership to make it happen, and I will be the Mayor who gets it done.

I will always put the needs of our neighborhoods first by finding money in the budget for things that make our neighborhoods better: parks, tree trimming, sidewalk repairs and --always-- public safety.

We need a new fire station in West Anaheim, and I'm committed to finding the resources to make it happen.

We have too much traffic congestion in Anaheim - our residents and our visitors waste hundreds of frustrating hours each year sitting, not moving, on our city streets. We just received a grant from OCTA to synchronize traffic signals. As your Mayor I will work with CalTrans and OCTA officials, as well as our city's Transportation Department, to translate that grant into real solutions. Less waiting in traffic, less breathing the exhaust of the car in front of you. That's what I'll do as your Mayor.

Four years ago, I promised to eliminate the 2.85% electric utility public benefit fee that was mandated by Sacramento politicians. I worked with the city manager's office and the general manager of the utility department and this tax was removed, saving YOU $7 million per year. Other candidates for Mayor may take credit for saving you money, but this was my fight. I make promises and I keep them.

Housing is a growing problem in our city. We need housing for all income levels. Even though living in a motel is not what I want for anyone, for some families, it's the only shelter they can afford on a temporary basis. I voted AGAINST limiting motel stays to 30 days or closing them down - it would have denied property owners the right to operate their businesses and it would have put poor families on the street.

I'm committed to investing a minimum of $3 million from Resort Area revenues each year for neighborhood and corridor beautification -- under my Administration, neighborhoods will be my top priority.

It's time to pay attention to all of our neighborhoods, and to use our resources to improve them. In West Anaheim we just broke ground on a police station, gym and youth center on Beach Boulevard. I'm working with Supervisor Coad's office to turn Carbon Creek into a bike trail and to bring the Tiger Woods Foundation to Dad Miller Golf Course. Other proposals for West Anaheim include:

· Expansion at Haskett Library; and · Development of "Stinkin' Lincoln" --now called West Gate -- into a retail and dining district

I will also revitalize Downtown by building a new central library, which will be surrounded by a mixture of new businesses and new housing. We'll create a core of vitality in downtown that will be more than just 8 to 5.

In the Hills we need more sports parks, and I'll work with our new County Supervisor to turn over a portion of Yorba Regional Park for the benefit of soccer and baseball leagues. We have plans to add another branch library in the hills and provide a gym for our youth at the police station at Weir Canyon. A permanent skateboard park is also planned for the hills.

I want to bring vibrant new projects like these to all areas of the city -- projects that increase our property values and make our city a better place.

I will protect our City's assets -- like the Convention Center, the Little Arena, the golf courses and the utility department. They generate a tremendous amount of money every year on an ongoing basis.

Our golf courses put between 2 and 2.3 Million dollars into the city's general fund each year. This money goes for police, fire, parks and libraries. You've read about the new clubhouse at Anaheim Hills Golf Course. A year and a half ago, we increased golf fees to pay for the clubhouse so that we wouldn't have to use YOUR tax dollars. As Mayor, I'll continue to make investments where the bottom line is good for all Anaheim residents.

I am proud to have the endorsement of both the Anaheim Police Officers and Firefighters.

As your next Mayor I am committed to Anaheim's future and making Anaheim America's Most Dynamic City - safe, beautiful, vibrant and productive. I'm Lucille Kring and I would be honored to have your vote for Mayor on November 5th.
