Jack is a long-time community activist who, as president of the Calabasas Highlands Homeowners Association, has vigorously pursued the preservation of open space in the Santa Monica Mountains, and was actively involved in the County's acquisition of 86 acres of parkland immediately south of the City border and adjacent to the Highlands that had been slated for massive development. He was also instrumental in the acquisition of the new City park situated at the junction of Old Topanga Canyon Road and Mulholland Highway. Professionally, Jack is Professor of English at California State University, Northridge. A Harvard educated Ph.D. and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Jack has published books on popular culture and literary criticism, and is the author of a number of books. These include a college composition textbook devoted to California studies (including California's water history) and a nationally adopted university composition text that is a best seller in its field. He has also been a regular contributor of columns to the Los Angeles Times editorial pages, writing on educational and popular cultural topics. |
