Jesus Garcia arrived in the United States in 1963 as a 5-year-old child. He came from Mexico with his father, a US citizen from Colorado, his mother and younger sister. All sought opportunities not then available in impoverished Central Mexico.

Education
Garcia attended public elementary schools in East Los Angeles and La Puente High School. First in his family to attend college, Garcia received an AA degree in Business Administration from Mt San Antonio Community College and a BA in Political Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Following three years' work for the UCLA Early Academic Outreach Office, he entered UCLA's Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning where he received his MA degree in Urban Planning. Garcia has also attended summer programs in Policy Skills at the University of Washington, Seattle and at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, Cambridge.

Professional career
Garcia's career background includes 15 years as a statistics analyst of educational and demographic information:

  • Three years in the UCLA Early Academic Outreach Office
  • Three years in the Office of Research and Planning the Los Angeles Community College
  • Five years at the US Census Bureau Headquarters in Washington,DC
  • Seven years as Coordinator of Research Services with the Kern County Superintendent of Schools
  • Community Service
    In Bakersfield Garcia has been actively involved in the community promoting educational and other opportunities for all children. He was the lead author of the Kern County Network for Children reports: Conditions of Children 1995-1998 and Our Schools 2000. He has served in leadership roles on a number of volunteer committees:

  • United Way Needs Assessment
  • Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation
  • Board of the California Child Care Resource and Referral Network
  • Hispanic Leadership Forum - US Department of Health and Human Service, Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Federal Office of Child Support Enforcement
  • Past and present Bakersfield City School District leadership activities include:

  • Chair, Cesar Chavez Elementary School Site Council and Booster Club
  • Co-chair 2001 Cesar Chavez State Holiday Celebration
  • Parent representative, 2002 Distinguished School visitor review
  • BCSD Superintendents Community Advisory Board
  • Chair, District Advisory Committee (DAC) on Title 1 and State Compensatory Education.

    In summary, Garcia has the formal education, career and community experience and, with two children enrolled at Cesar Chavez Elementary School, a vested interest in ensuring that all BCSD students have the best opportunities for a quality education.

    Garcia lives in Bakersfield with his wife Alejandra and four daughters.
