Fresno County, CA | November 5, 2002 Election |
General StatementBy Glenn L. DevoogdCandidate for Board Member; Fresno Unified School District; Trustee Area 7 | |

As an Associate Professor of reading and writing instruction at Fresno State and President of the California Professors of Reading, I have a depth of knowledge of the science of teaching to guide the board to make policy that would result in highly literate students. As a successful teacher of 16 years and director of educational programs for the children of migrant workers, I have a thorough understanding of how board policy affects the day-to-day teaching and learning in classrooms of both English language learners and high achieving students. As a parent of two FUSD students, the chair of a middle school site council, and the advisor of a tutoring program, I have worked extensively in schools and have come to know what instruction looks like not only in the boardroom but also inside the classroom. Though the board ought to encourage schools to be exciting, caring places where students and teachers investigate their world with passion and interest, often board policy promotes traditional school practice where classrooms become low achieving, uninspiring, and irrelevant. As a board member, I would seek to shift policy in ways that inspire teachers and students to achieve so much more in the schools. |
