Finance and Facility Planning for the Future

By Estela I. Cranston

Candidate for Board Member; Coalinga/Huron Unified School District; Trustee Area 2

This information is provided by the candidate
The importance of maintaining a balaced budget is essential to District operation. Providing safe and professional schools is essential for learning and runing the District.
To provide students with the learning tools such as; teachers, standard based curriculum, alternative programs, vocational programs, higher academic programs (AP) programs, safe and proper classrooms, supplies, and enrichment programs, it is important that the funds available to the district and are alocated properly and used in the best possible way to benefit the student.

Keeping a balanced budget is an on going process as the district needs increases we must establish adequit revenue to stustain our needs by doing the following:

  • Increase attendace, which enables us to increase the revenue from the state.

  • We must establish a budget where the expenditures do not exceed the revenue.

  • Apply for additional grants in all areas, as these additional funds will provide special programs in needed areas and help us maintain facilities.

  • Union barganing must benefit both employees and the District without putting a strain on district monies.

  • Need to establish a 5-10 year facility plan according to anticipated growth and determine where the funds will come from.

  • Higher the most qualified CBO for the District

The District budget is what I would call a fluid document, always changing always moving. When needs become more relevent than others, we need to adjust monies from one account to another. This is the area the Board relies on the expertise of the administration to keep it's figures straight and bring to us the proper information and best direction (in their opinion). When dealing with the budget yes the right thing to do what is best for the student. The budget is one of the biggest responsibilities a School Board will face, a 22 millon dollar budget, it is a business, a very important business.
