As a physician, I have been concerned with health and safety issues for most of my adult life. As Director of the Moraga-Orinda Fire District, I support intelligent, cost-effective management policies, well-trained and well-equipped firefighters and paramedics, improved water distribution (Measure N), vigorous vegetation management, and improved emergency response time.
Community Service:
- An Orinda resident for 21 years
- Appointed in June 2002 as Director, Division 5 of the Moraga-Orinda Fire District by unanimous vote of the Board of Directors
- President of the Rescue One Foundation, which raises funds through voluntary contributions in support of paramedic services within the Moraga-Orinda Fire District
- Co-Chair of Citizens for Fire Safe Orinda ("Yes on Fire Flow Measure N")
- Founder (in 1987) and Coordinator of Neighborhood Watch/Upper El Toyonal, a group of 150 families concerned with family and community safety and disaster preparedness
- Orinda Emergency Coordinator for RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service)
- Director for Community Activities, Orinda Rotary Club
- Meals on Wheels Driver
- Participated in our Fire District's Amateur Radio Volunteer Emergency Communications Team ("Com Van")
- Served on Orinda's Disaster Council
Experience:
- Career in academic medicine, with faculty positions at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Cornell University, and the University of California, San Francisco
- Currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Laboratory Medicine, UCSF
- Served for 16 years as Chief of the Laboratory Medicine Service and Director of Clinical Laboratories at San Francisco General Hospital, with responsibility for 150 employees and faculty members and a multimillion dollar operating budget
- Worked harmoniously with both the University of California and the City & County of San Francisco
- Served as Chairholder of a major section of NCCLS, the national organization that writes standards for medical diagnostic tests and procedures through consensus among medical scientists, manufacturers and government agencies
Education:
- A.B., Columbia University, with honors and special distinction in Zoology; Phi Beta Kappa honor society
- M.D., Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons; Alpha Omega Alpha honor society
- Residency and post-doctoral fellowship training at medical centers in New York City
- Certified in Internal Medicine and Hematology; additional experience in Clinical Pathology

- United States Naval Reserve (Medical Corps): Active duty 2 years, Ready Reserves 7 years; final rank of Lieutenant Commander
