Dan and his wife Judy are native Californians, married in 1965 and moved to Walnut in 1973. They have three children: Kelly, Mark & Carri. Kelly, born 1966, graduated from Cal Poly University, Pomona, with a Degree in Agricultural Science and from La Verne University with a Masters Degree in Counseling. Kelly is married to Doug Smith, lives in Oak Hill, CA and works as a student counselor at Quail Valley Middle School in Hesperia. Mark, born 1971, graduated with an Economics degree from Occidental College, in Eagle Rock. Mark is married to Deanna and lives in Shanghai, China, where he is Sales Director for IngramMicro's Asian subsidiary, E-tunnel. Carri, born 1976, graduated from Chapman University in Orange, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film & Television. She is a language arts teacher at Pinion Mesa Middle School in Wrightwood and is pursuing a Master's Degree in Education. Dan has a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Cal Poly University, Pomona, and a Masters in Business Administration from Los Angeles State University. Dan started working for the Southern California Gas Company in 1965, rose to the position of Engineering Analysis Center Manager, retiring in 1995 to begin a new career as a Gas Industry Consultant. While at The Gas Company, Dan was an active member of the American Gas Association, serving as the Chairman of the Task Committee on Plastic Materials and receiving the Association's Award of Merit. Dan served as a member of the Walnut Planning Commission, from December 1992 to December 1998, serving two terms as chairman. In December 1998, Dan was appointed as Walnut City Councilman, filling the seat vacated by Mr. Bob Pacheco, who was elected to the California State Assembly. Dan served as Council Member until May 2000. In June 2000, Dan was again appointed to the Walnut Planning Commission. In addition to serving as a Walnut Planning Commissioner, Dan is also a Neighborhood Watch Captain, Co-Chairperson of the Walnut Sister City Association, and a member of the Walnut Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Lanterman Community Advisory Committee, the Walnut Valley Unified School District's Equalization Task Force and the MtSAC Citizens Oversight Committee. Dan has served as a volunteer for a number of school, church and civic non-profit organizations since the early 70's, including: · Chair for the 1987, 1988 and 2001 Walnut Family Festivals (the city's largest single event). · Master of Ceremony for the 1999, 2000 and 2001 Walnut Fourth of July Fireworks Shows and the 2000 Walnut Family Festival. · Named Walnut's Community Hero by the 2000 Los Angeles County Fair Association. · Chaired the Fourth of July Event of Walnut's 40th Anniversary 1999 Celebration Year. · Co-President of the Walnut Community Coordinating Council from 1992 through 1995, and member of WIN (Walnut Information Network) and CARE (Cultural Awareness and Resource Exchange). · Campaign manager for the 1992 election of Councilman, Jack Isett. · Vice President of Walnut Coordinating Council 1989-91. · Coordinator of the city's 1990 Census workshop. · Secretary of the Walnut-Diamond Bar Citizens For Education committee. · In 1989, elected as Vice President for the College of Engineering to the Cal Poly Alumni Association Board of Directors. In 1989, Dan was also appointed to the Association Executive Board. · Dan & Judy were named 1989 "Volunteers Of The Year" by the Walnut Valley Chamber of Commerce, receiving commendations from the Los Angles County Board of Supervisors, the California State Assembly and the United States Congress. · Dan & Judy were honored by their city by being named as "Grand Marshals" for the 1989 Walnut Family Festival. · President the Future Farmers Of America and the Boys Varsity Baseball booster clubs of Walnut High School. · Coordinator of the 1988 and the 1990 Joint Diamond Bar/Walnut high schools Round-Up Dinners. · Coach and manager for various youth sports teams such as: boy's baseball, boy's soccer, girl's softball and girl's basketball. · Along with Judy, Dan served as Presenting Team Couple and Executive Couple for Worldwide Marriage Encounter; an organization designed to teach a technique of communications to married couples. Their responsibility included expansion and training of volunteers in various parts of the United States and in the Philippines. |
