EMPLOYMENT & INDUSTRY

By Janice E. Keating

Candidate for Council Member, Chair 2; City of Modesto

This information is provided by the candidate
Modesto Needs a Workable and Effective Plan to Restore Job Growth
The local area has been literally hemorrhaging jobs over the last fifteen years. Major plant closures have left vacant buildings, raised unemployment levels and slashed tax income. These empty buildings need to be filled with well-paid workers and the City needs to reap the economic benefits of a more robust local economy.

Neighboring communities have been far more successful than we have in attracting industry. They have done this by providing an environment that invites investment by major industries; tax and fee incentives, streamlined approval processes and other actions. Modesto needs to survey its assets # motivated, well-trained and willing workers along with dozens of idle buildings # and implement a plan that will bring jobs immediately.

The benefits provided to a community by major employers reach far beyond employment and taxes. Private employers fund cultural activities and community events that improve life in the City for all. Private employers fund charities and outreach programs that provide relief in a manner that is far more direct and effective than government programs.

As a member of the city council I will immediately move to implement a plan that will attract major employers to Modesto.
