Voters first elected Sally Havice to the California State Assembly in 1996. In 1998, Assemblywoman Havice won re-election by nearly 10,000 votes and in 2000 she won re-election with 61% of the vote and by over 27,000 votes. Prior to her election to the legislature, Assemblywoman Havice had been elected in 1989 and re-elected in 1993 to serve on the Board of Education for the ABC Unified School District.

Sally has lived nearly her entire life in California's 39th Congressional District. She attended Willowbrook Elementary School, South Whittier Middle School and graduated from Excelsior High School. After business college, she worked in the private and later enrolled at Cerittos College, where she earned two Associate of Arts degrees, one in Social Studies and the other in Spanish. She then went on to California State University, Long Beach, where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelors of Arts degree in English and a Masters of Arts degree in Linguistics.

Assemblywoman Havice understands the need for better, safer public schools where our children can grow and learn. For 23 years Sally taught English composition and literature at Cerritos College. While teaching she also served as the Interim Assistant Dean of Liberal Arts and as the Community Liaison for Cultural Performing Arts. Her work on campus included service as an officer on the Cerritos College Faculty Association and as a member of the Faculty Senate.

School safety, quality of life issues and serving the needs of her district have been the hallmark of Assemblywoman Havice's legislative career.

On education, Sally authored legislation which, when signed into law, established a statewide grant program to pay for community policing and mentoring on school campuses. Sally has authored legislation ranging from child privacy enhancements to expanded access to after-school programs because she understands the important role we must play in preparing our youth for the future.

On quality of life issues, Assemblywoman Havice authored legislation that created the largest urban nature conservancy in California. This conservancy will bring more parks and green space to the region while ensuring that communities along the Los Angeles River continue to be protected from the danger of flood.

Assemblywoman Havice currently serves as Chairperson for the Assembly Public Employees, Retirement and Social Security Committee and the Assembly Select Committee on School Safety. She is also a member of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, Assembly Insurance Committee, Assembly Transportation Committee, and the Assembly Select Committee on California Ports.

The Long Beach Press Telegram recently ranked Assemblywoman Havice as one of the 5 most effective legislators in Sacramento for her success in achieving her legislative goals.

Assemblywoman Havice has consistently received high rankings from various voter interest groups including: Congress of California Seniors (100% in 2000), California League of Conservation Voters (92% in 2000), Planned Parenthood of California (100% in 2000), California Children's Legislative Report Card (96% in 2001), and California Labor Federation AFL-CIO (92% in 2000). The California Narcotics Officers Association also named Sally "Legislator of the Year" during the 1999-2000 legislative session.

Assemblywoman Sally Havice, now a candidate for Congress in California's newly redrawn 39th Congressional District, brings a depth of experience and knowledge to the table that is unmatched by other candidates. Sally M. Havice was born October 16, 1937 in Los Angeles, California. She has three sons: Edward, a physician; Raul, a police officer; and Joseph, a computer scientist. She has nine grandchildren.
