Fred Euphrat is a fourth-generation Californian, born in San Francisco. His family has had Sonoma County ties since the 1800's, through his grandmother, Helen Steinberg, a Petaluma native. In 1960, Fred's family bought logged land in the Healdsburg area. Fred oriented his career to work with the family land, ultimately becoming a consultant in forestry and water science.

Fred graduated from Galileo High School in 1971, including two years of work-study at the California Academy of Sciences. He attended both San Francisco State and UC Berkeley, graduating in 1976 with a degree in Physical Geography. During college, he worked as a camp and after-school counselor for the Marin County Jewish Community Center.

Professional and Volunteer Service From 1976 to 1981, Fred was employed by the California Department of Forestry to assess logging's impact on soil and water. Working with the Board of Forestry, Fred helped re-draft forestry rules, making them more enforceable, practical and effective.

In 1982, Fred worked with the San Francisco Mental Health Association, developing a directory of self-help groups. He also volunteered with United Way on their telephone help line.

Developing Expertise In 1983, Fred returned to UC Berkeley for a Master's in Watershed Management, and worked every semester with the faculty in research and student teaching. In 1985 he went to Nepal, ultimately writing a thesis on hill farmers' soil conservation practices. During his year-long stay in Nepal, Fred also worked for the US Peace Corps. Fred's forestry studies in Nepal continue to this day.

Invited to complete a Doctorate at Berkeley, Fred studied the cumulative effects of logging and roads on urban water supplies. His work was supported by the East Bay Municipal Utility District, PG&E and Georgia-Pacific. With his water expertise, Fred worked for the San Francisco Water Department and has also consulted for Sonoma County.

Sonoma County Businessman Restless in San Francisco and longing for the family land, Fred moved to Sonoma County in 1992. With Healdsburg as a central location in the North Coast, Fred developed a forestry and environmental consulting business with an emphasis in education. He has taught at UC Berkeley, San Francisco State, Humboldt State and for the US Department of the Interior. Clients for forestry and environmental services have included corporations, government and small landowners, including his family. Fred's business, Forest, Soil & Water, Inc. has projects throughout Northern California.

In Sonoma County, Fred also found a new career volunteering for public radio. For four years he has delivered weekly essays on the environment, sharing his insights into nature with radio audiences. The show has been nationally recognized and is the basis for Fred's book Sonoma Mandala.

Public Service Over his career, Fred has been active on boards and commissions. Currently he sits on the Sonoma County Open Space Authority (as an alternate), the Friends of the Russian River and the Russian River Watershed Council and the national Forest Stewardship Council (US) Conflict Resolution Committee
