Shall the oversight of the Sheriff's Department be increased by adding one Assistant Sheriff and four Division Chiefs to the unclassified service; provided the additional Assistant Sheriff and two Division Chiefs may be non-sworn and appointed from outside the Sheriff's Department.

Impartial Analysis from County Counsel
This ordinance calls a special election to be held on March 5, 2002, for the purpose of voting upon an amendment to the Los Angeles County Charter which would add one (1) Assistant Sheriff, and four (4) Division Chiefs to the unclassified service in the Sheriff's office. The Assistant Sheriff may be non-sworn and appointed from outside the office of the Sheriff. Two Division Chiefs may also be non-sworn and appointed from outside the office of the Sheriff.

The amendment also makes a technical correction, changing the position of Inspector to the retitled position of Commander.

The ordinance also consolidates the special election with the statewide primary election to be held the same day.
