Issues important to Terry Howe

By Terry Howe

Candidate for Member Council; Village of Terrace Park

We need to get council to be more responsive to its citizens' requests and get council members who are willing to invest the time to get the job done.
I have attended many council and committee meetings over the last two years and have seen many citizens bring their requests to council. From cosmetic upgrades for our Village Green to questions about soil erosion and water damage, residents get no action from our current council. Al Nelson's group of volunteers have had to fight, beg, and scream to get what should be routine maintenance items for the Villge Green. Only after two years of this has council now approved funds to paint the Gazebo. And I will vote for a new sound system at the first council meeting I attend as a member! ( can you imagine the city of Cincinnati not providing a sound system for Fountain Square?) The point is that these people should never have had to come to council in the first place. There needs to be a proactive approach to village maintenance ( organizational charts, prioritization of tasks), village financing (our budget surplus is dwindling and planning for this should begin now!), and the village organization itself (we need to make sure things are run in the most efficient and cost effective manner).

I am also concerned about safety. With the growth of our population under age 18 (a 27.2% increase from 1990 per the census) and the rising affluence of our community there are now many more children as well as many more cars that use our streets. Safety of our children is , obviously, all parents main priority and is definitely an issue that we can't afford to be reactive. When faced with safety issues I will err on the conservative side and be proactive in keeping our citizens safe.

The most important aspect of getting this new proactive approach in place is to get council members who are willing to devote the time necessary to make it happen. Essentially, council members are volunteers. But, like any worthwhile cause, if you are going to volunteer to do something, then do it. Otherwise, step aside and let someone else get it done. The current four to five hours per month(the monthly council meeting takes 3 hours itself) some council members spend doesn't cut it! I am a small business owner and have the flexibility to devote the time it takes to get the job done. Howe about your vote in November. Thank you, Terry Howe
